Crypto address screening is a check of a single blockchain address against sanctions lists, labeled entities and on-chain risk indicators, run before you send funds to it or accept funds from it. The result is a risk score with the evidence behind it: which listed or high-risk entities the address is linked to, and how.
What an address screen checks
- Sanctions lists. Whether the address, or an address it has transacted with, appears on OFAC SDN, the EU consolidated list, UN sanctions or other watchlists.
- Entity identification. Whether the address belongs to a known service, such as an exchange deposit address, a mixer or a DeFi protocol.
- Counterparty exposure. Who the address has sent funds to and received funds from, and how much of that volume touches high-risk categories.
- Behavioral patterns. On-chain patterns that often accompany laundering, such as rapid pass-through of funds.
When to screen an address
- Before paying out to an address a customer gives you.
- Before accepting a deposit from an address you have not seen before.
- During onboarding, when a customer declares the wallets they will use.
- When a source-of-funds question comes up on an existing customer.
Address screening vs wallet screening
An address is one string on one chain. A wallet can control many addresses, sometimes on several chains. Screening an address answers "is this destination safe right now?". Screening a wallet looks at everything one person or service controls, and is usually repeated over time. See What is wallet screening?
Address screening vs KYT
Address screening scores an address at a point in time. KYT (Know Your Transaction) scores each transaction as it happens. Most compliance programs use both: screening at onboarding and before large transfers, KYT on every transaction. See KYT transaction risk scoring.

Frequently asked questions
Is a clean result proof that an address is safe?
No. A clean result means no link to a listed or high-risk entity was found in the data at the time of the check. Labels and lists change, which is why addresses that matter are screened again over time.
Do I need the owner's identity to screen an address?
No. Address screening works on public blockchain data. It does not identify the person behind the address; that is the job of KYC.
Which chains can I screen?
54 blockchains, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tron, Solana and the major EVM networks.
